If you searched "iOS 27," you probably want one of four things: whether it's actually out, when it will be, whether your iPhone gets it, and what's different from iOS 26. What is iOS 27?

iOS 27 is the version of Apple's iPhone operating system that follows iOS 26. Apple announced it at WWDC on Monday, June 8, 2026, the same day it released the first developer beta. Like every iOS release, it arrived alongside sibling updates for iPad, Mac, Apple TV, Apple Watch, and Apple Vision Pro — Apple ships all of its platforms' betas on the same day, in lockstep. The iPhone and iPad builds actually share a build number this cycle (both are on 24A5430a for beta 8); the Mac, Apple TV, and Apple Watch betas carry their own separate numbering, even though they all land on the same Monday.

iOS 27 is a free update for every supported iPhone. It is not a paid upgrade, a new phone requirement, or a subscription — it installs over your existing iOS 26 the same way any annual release does, through Settings. And unlike a new iPhone purchase, there's no decision to make about whether it's "worth it": now that it's reached general release, it's the standard update path for every supported device, the same way iOS 26 was before it.

Is iOS 27 out yet?

Yes. Apple released iOS 27.0, build 24A437, on Monday, September 14, 2026, capping eight developer betas over about fourteen weeks since the June keynote. It's rolling out automatically through Settings → General → Software Update to every supported iPhone. If you'd rather stay on last year's software for now, Apple is also still offering iOS 26.7, build 23H24, to iPhone 11 and later.

The distinction matters because "in beta" and "released" mean different things in practice. A beta is a preview build that Apple is actively testing and patching, available to anyone who enrolls a device at developer.apple.com or beta.apple.com. A release is the finished, stable build that lands automatically for every supported iPhone through ordinary software update. iOS 27 is squarely in the second category now — a finished, public release, not a preview build.

The iOS 27 beta timeline so far

Apple doesn't publish every intermediate beta's exact date on this feed the way it does the first and most recent, but the cadence between beta 1 and beta 7 — roughly one build every one to two weeks — matches every iOS cycle since iOS 16. What that cadence tells you: beta 1 in June is always the roughest build of the cycle — expect crashes, unfinished features, and heavier battery use. By the time a cycle reaches its seventh beta in late August, the software is normally close to what actually ships. Apple usually follows a handful of these mid-cycle developer betas with a Release Candidate in the first week or two of September — functionally the final build, distributed to developers a few days before everyone else gets it, and the last checkpoint before general release.

When did iOS 27 come out?

iOS 27.0 was released on Monday, September 14, 2026 — exactly the date this page projected back when the software was still in beta. It followed the same pattern that's held for over a decade: an early-September iPhone event, followed by the finished software about a week later.

The reasoning held up because it wasn't one pattern — it was two independent ones lining up. Apple's September iPhone event has landed in the first two weeks of the month for over a decade, and the software release trailed that event by about a week again this year, just as it had before. That's the same track record this site will lean on to project iOS 28's release date next year.

Which iPhones support iOS 27?

iOS 27 runs on iPhone 11 and every model released after it, plus the iPhone SE (2nd generation) and SE (3rd generation):

Not supported: iPhone XS, XS Max, XR, and anything older.

The three tiers within iOS 27

Supporting iOS 27 and supporting its AI features are two different lists. There are effectively three tiers of iPhone this year:

• Runs iOS 27: iPhone 11 and later, as listed above — every device gets the OS, the new Phone app tools, FaceTime Dual Capture, and the Photos and parental control updates.
• Runs Apple Intelligence: iPhone 15 Pro, 15 Pro Max, or any iPhone 16 or later. This is the cutoff for the conversational Siri, Writing Tools, and image generation features.
• Runs the most advanced on-device features: iPhone 17 Pro, 17 Pro Max, or iPhone Air only.

What's new in iOS 27

iOS 27.0 shipped with the feature set that had settled by the late betas — this is what's actually in the software, not what was rumored before June:

Siri you can talk to like a person

Siri in iOS 27 handles back-and-forth conversation instead of one command at a time, and it can draw on personal context — your messages, calendar, and other on-device information — to carry out tasks that span multiple apps. Ask it to do something that needs three steps and it can chain them, rather than making you issue each step as a separate request. This is the feature Apple has been building toward for several cycles, and iOS 27 is the first release where the conversational back-and-forth and the cross-app task execution are both live together rather than shipping as separate, narrower capabilities.

In practice, this changes what's worth asking Siri at all. A request like "find the confirmation email for tonight's dinner reservation and text the address to my sister" needs three separate lookups and one send — the kind of chain that older Siri versions couldn't hold onto between steps. It needs the Apple Intelligence hardware tier described below, since the personal-context reasoning is the part that requires the newer chips.

Call Context in the Phone app

When you're on a call with a business, the Phone app can surface relevant information you already have on your iPhone — a flight number sitting in a Mail confirmation, for example — without you having to switch apps mid-call to dig it up. It's a narrow feature by design: it works with information already on your device, tied to the call you're currently on, rather than pulling in anything from outside your iPhone.

FaceTime Dual Capture

FaceTime can now stream your front and rear cameras at the same time, so the person on the other end sees your face and what you're looking at in the same call, instead of you having to flip the camera back and forth. It's aimed at the calls where showing something matters as much as talking — walking a family member through a repair, or showing someone a place in person — without losing the face-to-face part of the conversation.

Photos and parental controls

The Photos app picks up expanded editing tools in this cycle, building on the editing overhaul from recent iOS releases rather than replacing it outright. Parental controls are improved as well, giving families finer-grained options than iOS 26 offered — useful if you manage Screen Time or Family Sharing settings across more than one child's device.

Apple Intelligence: Writing Tools and image generation

Apple Intelligence's Writing Tools are expanded in iOS 27, and image generation now runs through a private cloud model — processing happens off-device but inside Apple's private cloud infrastructure rather than a third-party service. Apple's pitch for that architecture is that a request only leaves your iPhone when the task genuinely needs more computing power than the device has, and even then it runs inside infrastructure Apple has said is built so that not even Apple can access the data being processed. These features need the Apple Intelligence-capable hardware tier described above; the plainer Writing Tools that shipped in earlier iOS versions still work on the same devices they always did.

General performance

Beyond the named features, Apple's release notes point to general app performance improvements across the system — the kind of under-the-hood work that doesn't show up as a headline feature but affects how the whole OS feels day to day.

iOS 27.0 is a stable, public release, not a beta, so the usual pre-release caution doesn't apply anymore. It's still smart to back up your iPhone before any major software update, but there's no reason to wait for bugs to settle — this is the same finished build every supported iPhone will eventually run.

iOS 27 vs. iOS 28: what this year tells you about next year

This site's primary focus is iOS 28, next year's release — expected to be announced at WWDC in June 2027, with the same September-event-then-software pattern iOS 27 just followed. There's a real link between the two: the device list iOS 27 just confirmed (iPhone 11 and up, nothing dropped) sets the floor for what iOS 28 will likely support, since Apple's cuts tend to happen one model generation at a time rather than in a single sweep. If iPhone 11 support survived this year, it's the device most likely to be on the bubble for iOS 28's cutoff next year.
