Straight answer

Is iOS 28 out yet?

Short answer

No. As of September 2026, iOS 28 does not exist — not as a final release, and not as a beta. Apple has not announced it, named it, or shown a single feature of it.

Here is what is actually true today:

  • iOS 27 is the current cycle. Its beta is running now, and the final release is expected around September 2026.
  • iOS 28 should be announced at WWDC 2027, which we project for June 7, 2027.
  • The first developer beta should arrive the same day as the keynote.
  • The public beta should follow in early to mid-July 2027.
  • The final release should land in mid-September 2027.

Every date above is a projection built from Apple’s own release history over the past decade — not an Apple statement. Nothing about iOS 28 is confirmed yet. How we calculate these dates →

Worth saying plainly

If a site is offering you an “iOS 28 beta download” today, it is not real. No iOS 28 build exists anywhere, so any file claiming to be one is useless at best and malicious at worst.

When the beta does arrive, it will come from Apple and only from Apple — through Settings on your iPhone, or through Apple’s own developer site. It will never be a file you download from a third party. How the real install will work →

iOS 27 is the release you can actually install

iOS 28 is still a 2027 story. iOS 27 is in beta today and reaches everyone in September — and how Apple handles this cycle is the best evidence we have for what next year looks like.

No iPhone lost support this year. But “runs iOS 27” and “runs what Apple demoed” are two different lists, and most articles only print the first one.

Troubleshooting

Common iOS 28 beta problems — and what actually fixes them

Every iOS beta cycle produces the same handful of problems, in roughly the same order. Each guide below is built from how Apple’s beta cycles have consistently behaved, so it will be usable the day the first build ships.

Settings

Beta Updates missing from Settings

You enrolled, but Software Update shows no Beta Updates row at all. This is almost always an Apple Account mismatch, not a broken device.

Battery

Battery draining unusually fast

Heavy drain for a day or two after any major update is normal — that’s reindexing, not a bug. Here is where the line sits between normal and a real problem.

Apps

Apps refusing to open

Banking and authentication apps often block beta builds deliberately. That’s tamper detection working as designed, not something you can fix from your side.

Storage

Not enough storage

The download size is not the free space you actually need. Here is the realistic figure to plan around, and how to reclaim space without deleting things you’ll miss.

Install

Stuck on “Verifying Update”

Or frozen at the Apple logo. The fix is an escalation — wait, then force restart, then Recovery Mode — always least destructive first.

Exit

Getting off the beta

Turning off Beta Updates and leaving the beta entirely are two different actions, and only one of them erases your iPhone.

FAQ

iOS 28 questions, answered

The short versions. Each answer links to a full guide with the detail.

When will iOS 28 be released?

iOS 28 is expected to be announced at the WWDC 2027 keynote on June 7, 2027, with the final version shipping in mid-September 2027 alongside the new iPhones. Apple hasn't confirmed dates yet — here's how we arrived at that projection.

When does the iOS 28 beta come out?

The first developer beta should land on June 7, 2027, right after the keynote. The public beta typically follows about four weeks later, in early-to-mid July. Our beta guide explains how to be ready on day one.

Which iPhones will support iOS 28?

We expect iPhone 13 and newer, including the SE (3rd gen) and later. The iPhone 12 series is most at risk of being dropped. See the full compatibility breakdown.

Is the iOS 28 beta free?

Yes. Developer betas have been free for everyone with an Apple Account since 2023, the public beta is free at beta.apple.com, and the final release is a free update.

How do I install the iOS 28 beta?

Enroll at developer.apple.com (or beta.apple.com for the public beta), then go to Settings → General → Software Update → Beta Updates on your iPhone and choose the iOS 28 beta. Back up first — the full walkthrough is here.

Is it safe to run the beta on my main iPhone?

Early developer betas are rough: battery drain, crashes, broken banking apps. Wait for the public beta if your iPhone is your only phone, and always make an archived backup so you can downgrade.

What's new in iOS 28?

Reports point to a fully LLM-powered Siri, the third generation of the Liquid Glass design, system-wide live translation, and an AI privacy dashboard. We rate every rumor's credibility on the features page.

Will the iPhone 12 or 13 get iOS 28?

iPhone 13: probably yes. iPhone 12: genuinely uncertain — it sits right at the edge of Apple's six-to-seven-year support window. Full analysis here.
