How we called September 14 ahead of time

Anyone can guess a date. The useful part is showing the work, so here it is, kept below in past tense now that iOS 27 has shipped — it's the same method this site uses for the iOS 28 release date projection. Apple doesn't release a new iOS version on a fixed calendar date — it releases it a short, consistent number of days after its September iPhone event, and that event itself lands in the same narrow window every year. Line up the cycles and the pattern was hard to miss:

Two things hold across every one of those rows. The event lands in the first two weeks of September, and the release always lands on a Monday, always within about a week of the event. Applying that same rule to 2026 — an event around September 9 — pointed at the following Monday, September 14: not a leak, not a source, just the same pattern Apple had run for four years straight, applied one more time.

The iOS 27 beta timeline, with real build numbers

The beta cycle itself was the other half of the evidence. iOS 27 entered beta on WWDC keynote day and moved through builds on a steady cadence all the way to release. Here's what's confirmed from Apple's own developer releases feed, through the final release:

Notice the build-number convention: 24A is Apple's internal marker for this year's major release, and the number climbing after it (5355q, then 5424a) tracked successive beta builds within that release. When the public version shipped, it dropped the beta suffix entirely and switched to a clean build: 24A437. Seven betas in eleven weeks, all landing on Mondays, was itself a signal: Apple was on its normal rhythm, not visibly behind or rushing — and the release date held right on schedule.

What a Release Candidate actually is

The Release Candidate — RC for short — is the last stop before the public release, and it's worth understanding on its own terms because people often confuse it with just another beta. It isn't. By the time Apple ships an RC, the feature set is locked, the known bugs from the betas are patched, and the only thing left is a short window for developers to confirm their apps work on the exact build that's about to go out to hundreds of millions of phones.

In practice, the RC and the final public release are almost always the identical build. Apple reserves the right to spin a second RC if something serious turns up in that last week, but a second RC is the exception, not the rule. For iOS 27, the RC shipped in the same window as the September event, ahead of the September 14 public release, though its exact build number wasn't in the feeds we checked. If you spent all summer avoiding the beta, iOS 27.0 itself is now the lowest-risk build to install, since it's the finished version everyone gets.

What time does iOS 27 actually come out?

Apple doesn't publish a release time, but the pattern here is just as consistent as the date pattern. Recent iOS releases have started rolling out from Apple's own servers in the late morning, Pacific time — the same slot Apple has used for years to flip the switch on both the public beta and the final release.

What actually happens at the September event

The event itself is about hardware, not software — new iPhones, and this year likely new Apple Watches alongside them — but it's the trigger for the software date, for two reasons. First, Apple wants the new phones to leave the store already running the new OS, which means iOS 27.0 has to be finished and ready to preload before the phones ship. Second, the event is traditionally when Apple confirms the exact release date on stage, usually as a single line near the end of the keynote: "iOS 27 is available starting September [date]."

What could have moved the date — and didn't

Before the release, this page laid out the honest error range on the projection above rather than pretending it was exact. Here's what could have moved September 14, and what actually happened:

• The event date itself (±1 week). Apple's September event has moved around within the first two weeks of the month before. It didn't move enough to matter this year — the event landed in its usual window, and the gap between event and release held at the pattern's typical five to seven days.
• A second RC. If something significant turns up in the first Release Candidate, Apple has occasionally needed a second one, which typically costs a few days, not weeks. Nothing pushed the release off its Monday this year.
• Feature staggering. In past cycles, some of the more ambitious pieces shown at the keynote or in beta 1 have landed for everyone in a later .1 or .2 update rather than on day one. That's a question about the feature list, not the release date, and this page doesn't track feature-by-feature rollout beyond release day.

What history didn't support — and didn't happen — was a multi-week slip in the final release date once the beta cycle was already this far along. Seven betas in, on schedule, in late August was a strong signal the cycle was tracking normally, and it shipped exactly on schedule.

Who this actually affects

Every iPhone that ran iOS 26 also runs iOS 27 — nothing was cut this year. That's the full list: iPhone 11 and later (every Plus, Pro, Pro Max, and Air model since included), plus the iPhone SE 2nd generation and later. If your phone updated to iOS 26, it updates to iOS 27 too.

Apple Intelligence is a separate bar. It needs an iPhone 15 Pro, 15 Pro Max, or any iPhone 16 or later — and the newest, most capable on-device features are limited further still, to iPhone 17 Pro, 17 Pro Max, or iPhone Air. So there are effectively three tiers this year: phones that get iOS 27, the smaller set that also gets Apple Intelligence, and the smaller set still that gets everything Apple Intelligence can do. It's worth noticing what this means looking one cycle ahead. iOS 28 arrives in June 2027, and Apple's device cutoffs almost never widen year to year — whatever iPhone can run iOS 27 this September is very likely the floor for iOS 28 next year too, not a new, higher bar. What's actually in the release, based on the beta

None of this was speculation — it was already running in the iOS 27 beta before release, and it's what shipped in iOS 27.0 on release day, aside from any staggered features (more on that above). Siri gets a real back-and-forth conversational mode with access to your personal context and the ability to carry out multi-step tasks across apps, rather than one command at a time. The Phone app adds Call Context, which surfaces relevant on-device information mid-call — a flight number sitting in Mail, for instance, while you're on hold with an airline. FaceTime adds Dual Capture, streaming your front and rear camera at once. Photos gets an expanded set of editing tools, parental controls get a meaningful overhaul, and Apple Intelligence picks up broader Writing Tools plus image generation running through a private cloud model.
