Anyone can guess a date. The useful part is showing the work, so here it is. Apple doesn't release a new iOS version on a fixed calendar date — it releases it a short, consistent number of days after its September iPhone event, and that event itself lands in the same narrow window every year. Line up the last four cycles and the pattern is hard to miss:

Two things hold across every one of those rows. The event lands in the first two weeks of September, and the release always lands on a Monday, always within about a week of the event. Apply that same rule to 2026 — an event around September 9 — and the following Monday is September 14. That's the whole projection: not a leak, not a source, just the same pattern Apple has run for four years straight, applied one more time.

The iOS 27 beta timeline, with real build numbers

The beta cycle itself is the other half of the evidence. iOS 27 entered beta on WWDC keynote day and has been moving through builds on a steady cadence ever since. Here's what's confirmed from Apple's own developer releases feed, alongside what's still ahead:

Notice the build-number convention: 24A is Apple's internal marker for this year's major release, and the number climbing after it (5355q, then 5424a) tracks successive beta builds within that release. When the public version finally ships, it'll drop the beta suffix entirely and switch to a clean build like 24A5xxx-style final tag or, more often for a dot-zero release, a plain 24Axxx — Apple hasn't published that number yet because the build doesn't exist yet. Seven betas in eleven weeks, all landing on Mondays, is itself a signal: Apple is on its normal rhythm, not visibly behind or rushing.

What a Release Candidate actually is

The Release Candidate — RC for short — is the last stop before the public release, and it's worth understanding on its own terms because people often confuse it with just another beta. It isn't. By the time Apple ships an RC, the feature set is locked, the known bugs from the betas are patched, and the only thing left is a short window for developers to confirm their apps work on the exact build that's about to go out to hundreds of millions of phones.

In practice, the RC and the final public release are almost always the identical build. Apple reserves the right to spin a second RC if something serious turns up in that last week, but a second RC is the exception, not the rule. For iOS 27, expect the RC to land in the same week as the September event — likely a day or two afterward — with the public release following within the week after that. What time does iOS 27 actually come out?

Apple doesn't publish a release time, but the pattern here is just as consistent as the date pattern. Recent iOS releases have started rolling out from Apple's own servers in the late morning, Pacific time — the same slot Apple has used for years to flip the switch on both the public beta and the final release.

What actually happens at the September event

The event itself is about hardware, not software — new iPhones, and this year likely new Apple Watches alongside them — but it's the trigger for the software date, for two reasons. First, Apple wants the new phones to leave the store already running the new OS, which means iOS 27.0 has to be finished and ready to preload before the phones ship. Second, the event is traditionally when Apple confirms the exact release date on stage, usually as a single line near the end of the keynote: "iOS 27 is available starting September [date]."

That confirmation, when it happens, is the moment this page updates from "expected" to "confirmed." Until then, September 14 is our best read of the pattern, not a quote from Apple.

What could still move the date

Here's the honest error range on the projection above, rather than pretending it's exact:

• The event date itself (±1 week). Apple's September event has moved around within the first two weeks of the month before. If it lands later than September 9, the release shifts with it — the gap between event and release has stayed far more consistent than the event date itself.
• A second RC. If something significant turns up in the first Release Candidate, Apple has occasionally needed a second one, which typically costs a few days, not weeks.
• Feature staggering. Some of what's in the beta today — particularly the more ambitious Apple Intelligence pieces — has, in past cycles, shown up at the keynote or in beta 1 and then actually landed for everyone in a .1 or .2 update rather than day one. The release date tends to hold; the full feature list on that date is the part that sometimes doesn't.

What history doesn't support is a multi-week slip in the final release date once a beta cycle is already this far along — seven betas deep, on schedule, in late August. That's a strong signal the cycle is tracking normally.

Who this actually affects

Every iPhone that runs iOS 26 also runs iOS 27 — nothing was cut this year. That's the full list: iPhone 11 through iPhone 17 (including every Plus, Pro, Pro Max, and the iPhone Air), plus the iPhone SE 2nd and 3rd generation. If your phone updated to iOS 26, it'll update to iOS 27 on release day too.

Apple Intelligence is a separate bar. It needs an iPhone 15 Pro, 15 Pro Max, or any iPhone 16 or later — and the newest, most capable on-device features are limited further still, to iPhone 17 Pro, 17 Pro Max, or iPhone Air. So there are effectively three tiers this year: phones that get iOS 27, the smaller set that also gets Apple Intelligence, and the smaller set still that gets everything Apple Intelligence can do. It's worth noticing what this means looking one cycle ahead. iOS 28 arrives in June 2027, and Apple's device cutoffs almost never widen year to year — whatever iPhone can run iOS 27 this September is very likely the floor for iOS 28 next year too, not a new, higher bar. None of this is speculation — it's what's already running in the iOS 27 beta today, which means it's what ships on release day barring the staggering mentioned above. Siri gets a real back-and-forth conversational mode with access to your personal context and the ability to carry out multi-step tasks across apps, rather than one command at a time. • Back up now, not on release day. A full backup before any major update is the single best insurance against a rough first install. Do it this week, not while everyone else is hitting Apple's servers at once.
• Check your device against the real list. Confirm your iPhone model and, if you care about Apple Intelligence, which of the three device tiers you actually land in.
• Decide your beta stance now. If you're still on the developer or public beta track, plan to update to the RC as soon as it lands rather than waiting for the final release — it's the same build, just earlier.
• Don't expect the exact minute. Treat "around 10 a.m. Pacific" as a same-day target, not a countdown timer.
