What iOS 27 already tells us
Before projecting a full year ahead, look at what already happened this cycle. iOS 27, in beta now and expected to ship around mid-September 2026, supports the iPhone 11 and later, and — listed separately, as Apple always does with the SE — the iPhone SE (2nd generation) and later. Both SE models are getting iOS 27. More notably, Apple didn't drop a single iPhone this cycle, the first time that's happened in a while. What actually happens if your SE doesn't get iOS 28
If you own the SE 2 and our projection holds, here's what "dropped" actually means in practice — and it's a lot less dramatic than the phrase implies:
- Security patches keep coming. Apple has a long history of patching the last supported major version on older devices for years past its feature-update cutoff. An SE 2 parked on its final iOS version should still receive important security fixes well into the iOS 28 and iOS 29 cycles.
- Apps don't stop working overnight. Developers keep supporting older iOS versions for years because the installed base is large. Individual apps eventually raise their minimum requirement, but that erosion is slow, not a cliff.
- The phone keeps doing its job. Calls, texts, banking apps, Touch ID, the camera — none of it switches off. What you lose is access to future features, not anything the phone already does today.
